Montenegro road trip itineraries with Skadar Lake

Montenegro is roughly the size of Northern Ireland with mountains in the way. From Virpazar you are 35 minutes from Podgorica airport, 35 from the Adriatic at Bar, 45 from Budva, 45 from Cetinje and 80 from Kotor. Nowhere else in the country reaches that many places in under an hour.

The usual mistake is treating the lake as a two-hour stop between the coast and the airport. Reversed — coast days out of a lake base — you avoid resort prices, resort traffic and the worst of the July heat.

Three days done this way sees more of the country than the standard Kotor–Budva shuffle, and costs meaningfully less.

The full-day boat on day two is what people remember; the private all-over-the-lake boat tour is the only format with the hours to do islands and southern water in one go.

• Day 1 — Arrive Podgorica, drive to the lake, evening cruise.
• Day 2 — Full-day private boat: islands, southern basin, long swim stop.
• Day 3 — Cetinje museums, Lovćen mausoleum, back down via Njeguši for pršut.
• Day 4 — Kotor bay: old town early, Perast and a swim, return over Sozina.
• Day 5 — Murići beach or a morning e-bike along the shoreline road, then departure.

• Days 1–3 — Lake base: boat tour, wine villages, Rijeka Crnojevica and Cetinje.
• Day 4 — Drive north to Kolašin or the Tara canyon (2 h), rafting or the Đurđevića Tara bridge.
• Day 5 — Durmitor: Black Lake circuit and the Sedlo pass road.
• Day 6 — Return south via Ostrog Monastery, evening on the coast.
• Day 7 — Kotor or Budva, then the airport.

• Sozina tunnel toll is €3.50 each way; the old Sutorman pass road is free and takes an extra 45 minutes of hairpins.
• Coastal traffic between Budva and Kotor in July can double any estimate between 10:00 and 13:00.
• Fuel is widely available except on the southern shoreline road — fill up in Virpazar before Murići.
• Mountain roads are well surfaced but narrow; local drivers overtake with confidence you may not share.

Late May to mid-June is the best all-round window: lilies out, hills still green, water warm enough to swim, coast not yet full. September is a close second, with warmer water and better prices. July and August are hot and busy everywhere below 800 m — perfectly doable if you start days at 07:30 and rest through the middle.

Whichever month, book accommodation before boats and boats before restaurants. Beds near the lake are the genuinely scarce resource — a recommended apartment near Skadar Lake type of base is worth locking in early in summer.
