Swimming and hidden beaches on Skadar Lake
Where the water is genuinely clean, where it is not, and the coves you can only reach by boat.

Can you swim in Skadar Lake?
Yes — this is one of the questions we get most often, and the honest answer has a geography attached to it. The southern and south-western parts of the lake are deep, cool and clear, with pebbled shorelines and water that you would happily swim in anywhere. The shallow northern edge around Virpazar is a different body of water: warm, weedy, mud-bottomed and full of vegetation by August.
So the answer is not 'yes' or 'no' but 'not here, forty minutes that way'. Every experienced skipper knows the difference and will take you to the right side if you say swimming matters to you.
The swimming spots that are actually good
| Spot | Access | Bottom | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Murići | Car (50 min) or boat | Pebble | The best public beach on the lake; small fee, café, shade |
| Coves west of Murići | Boat only | Pebble/rock | Empty even in August |
| Pješačac | Car + short walk | Pebble | Quiet, no facilities |
| Southern basin, open water | Boat only | Deep water | Cool, clear, no entry point on shore |
| Virpazar shoreline | Walk | Mud/weed | Not recommended in summer |
Water temperature through the year
- May: 18–21 °C — bracing but fine after a hot drive.
- June: 22–24 °C — comfortable, lilies in bloom.
- July–August: 25–28 °C — bath-warm in the shallows, cooler in the deep basin.
- September: 23–25 °C — the best combination of warm water and empty shoreline.
- October: 19–22 °C — swimmable in a good year.
Swimming from a boat
The best swims on this lake are from a boat in the southern basin: no shoreline, no weed, thirty metres of clear water beneath you and mountains on both sides. Group tours seldom go that far, so a swim stop on a shared cruise usually means a brief dip somewhere close to the reed belt.
If clean water is the priority, the exclusive full lake experience reaches the southern coves and allows the kind of unhurried stop — an hour rather than fifteen minutes — that makes the drive worthwhile.
Water shoes matter. Almost every good entry point here is pebble or rock, and the lake bed can be sharp.
Frequently asked questions
Is Skadar Lake clean enough to swim in?
In the deep southern parts, yes — water quality is monitored and generally good. Avoid the shallow, weedy northern margin near Virpazar in high summer.
Are there sharks, snakes or leeches?
No dangerous fish. Grass snakes are present and harmless, and leeches are occasionally found in warm muddy shallows, which is another reason to swim in the deeper water.
How do I get to Murići beach?
About 50 minutes by car from Virpazar along the southern shoreline road, or roughly the same by fast boat. The road is scenic and narrow.
