Traditional wooden boat tours on Skadar Lake

The flat-bottomed wooden boats on this lake were built for fishing in water that is two metres deep in April and knee-deep in September. That shallow draught is why they can enter channels a fibreglass hull would never attempt, and why they were the only transport between the lake villages until the road reached Virpazar.

Most working boats today carry a small outboard rather than oars, but the hull shape has not changed. They sit low, they move slowly, and they make a fraction of the noise. On a lake whose main attractions are birds and silence, that combination is not nostalgia — it is the correct equipment.

Poseljani is a hamlet on the northern shore, reachable by a network of channels through submerged willow forest. The four-hour version of this route is the best-value experience on the lake and the one locals recommend to friends.

The shape of it: out through the Orahovštica channel in the first light, an hour of narrow water where the willows close overhead, the open lily fields, a stop at Poseljani for coffee or a swim, then a slow return along the reed belt with the engine barely turning. Four hours sounds long until you do it; almost nobody wishes it had been two.
